Therapy Dog Preparation

Some dogs have a special way of helping people feel seen, comforted, and connected. Whether it's listening to a child read at the library, visiting someone in a healthcare setting, or bringing a smile to a neighbor during a difficult day, therapy dogs have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their communities.

At Blue Mountain Canine, we believe successful therapy teams are built on more than good manners. They grow through trust, thoughtful observation, clear communication, and a deep understanding of each dog's individual needs. Our relationship-centered approach helps dogs and handlers develop the confidence, skills, and partnership needed to navigate real-world volunteer environments together.

Whether you're just beginning to explore therapy work or already have a goal in mind, we'd love to be part of your journey. Therapy dog coaching and small-group classes are currently in development. Join our interest list to receive updates, learn about upcoming opportunities, and help shape future programs as we continue building this exciting new chapter.

Is Therapy Dog Preparation Right for You?

Therapy work is about more than having a friendly dog. It involves learning to work as a team while recognizing your dog's comfort, supporting their well-being, and responding thoughtfully to the people and environments you visit.

This program may be a good fit if you:

• Enjoy working together with your dog in new environments

• Are interested in volunteering in schools, libraries, healthcare settings, or community organizations

• Value relationship-centered, humane training

• Want to build confidence, communication, and advocacy skills as a team

Not every dog is meant to become a therapy dog—and that's perfectly okay. Every dog, however, can benefit from the relationship, communication, confidence, and life skills that therapy teams practice together.
